Margao: A large group of protesters, for the second day in a row, set up roadblocks in Margao and surrounding areas, effectively disrupting daily activities. They are calling for the immediate arrest of former RSS chief Subhash Velingkar due to his derogatory remarks on St Francis Xavier. The protesters dispersed around 9.45 pm, announcing plans to continue their action on Sunday. After the agitators had dispersed from Margao, some policemen resorted to cane-charge (in support of Velingkar) Saturday night leaving one injured.

 

Margao faced traffic congestion on Saturday as groups of protesters chanting slogans blocked roads between the old market circle and the Collectorate building. School children and visitors were among those affected by the disruptions, though ambulance services continued without interruption.

 

MLAs Cruz D’Silva and Viresh Borkar showed their support for the protesters, calling on the chief minister to take swift action. The protest began at 10 am at the Margao police station, where participants chanted slogans against both the most corrupt police and Velingkar, before marching to a rally.

 

Hundreds of protesters then marched from the Margao police station to the old market circle, where they sat on the road, disrupting traffic to highlight their demands. As the day went on, the crowd grew larger, keeping the police busy. Late in the evening, South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes, along with MLAs Yuri Alemao and Altone D’Costa, arrived and urged the police to consider the circumstances.

 

By 7.30 pm, additional police force was deployed in preparation for potential enforcement action, including lathi charge.
